The Ministry Major within the Bachelor of Theology is designed to prepare students for Christian ministry in a broad range of contexts in contemporary society both within and beyond existing denominations. The structure of this major necessitates that it builds upon the foundational subjects that make up the compulsory Christian Foundations Core. The Ministry Major requires students to acquire a proficiency in a broad range of theoretical and practical topics foundational to ministry in contemporary and multicultural Australia. The compulsory Field Education subject and other electives in addition to the major allow the student to expand, deepen and broaden their knowledge and understanding of Ministry and gain valuable practical experience in the later stages of their study program.
The practical subjects of this major provide the student with the theoretical and practical background experiences required to function effectively in a variety of church, para‐church and community‐based settings. These practical subjects relate to and integrate with the theoretical subjects in this course. This enables the transition of the person from being a student to being a professional capable of taking a formal role involving a particular aspect of ministry. The inclusion of electives in the course provides the student with the opportunity to pursue the study of subjects or areas that have a personal appeal to the student from the subjects contained within the other streams in the Bachelor of Theology program and the Tabor College Victoria Bachelor of Arts program. This element of the course design not only allows for areas of personal interest but also can provide skills required for future vocation such as pastoral ministry, preaching and teaching ministry, church administration, chaplaincy and youth ministry.
