Unit Description

This unit explores the practical complex issues associated with working with young people. It explores ethical and legal frameworks. How to navigate the government, health, and other service systems in Australia, and know which referral pathway to use. It explores issues of power and stigma and how to advocate for good outcomes. It builds skills for listening, establishing repour, empathy, working with families.

  1. Ethical and systems frameworks
  2. Legal issues – sexual consent, working with young people, abuse and neglect, mental health.
  3. Working within complex systems – health, education, child protection, mental health.
  4. Building therapeutic relationships – listening, empathy, empowerment, transparency, partnerships, building repour, engaging with families
  5. When and who to refer a young person to for help
  6. How to reduce stigma
