Unit Description

The unit commences with an introduction to the processes of ministry planning, critical reflection, theological reflection and cultural investigation. Key components of ministry field education evaluation are considered. Particular attention is given to how students can assess and plan their ministry activities. The action-reflection skills that are required to meet the demands made on the student in a range of ministry situations are identified.

The bulk of this unit involves supervised practical experience in a mission and/or ministry, community or marketplace situation, theological and critical reflection, and application of strategies for ministry supervision, spiritual direction and personal maturity.

An important component of the unit requires the student to evaluate critical incidents and effectiveness in various ministry situations. On-campus workshop/tutorial sessions will be used for presentations of critical incident and ministry observation reports.

Throughout the unit, emphasis is placed on the need for students to take responsibility for managing their own ministry field education. The need for an appropriate and professional ethical standard of behaviour in ministry situations is stressed throughout the unit. Through analysis of other students’ critical incidence and reflection reports, students gain insight into the issues of ministry and practice reflection.

Each student will be supervised by an appropriate ministry field education supervisor and maintain a relationship with an approved spiritual director. At the conclusion of the unit, the student is expected to be able to evaluate their ministry field education and plan further ministry.

Teaching Strategies

Teaching strategies may include: lectures, tutorials and weekend schools; class discussions; field trips; presentation of instructional material in the form of printed documentation, DVD, video and audio tape and online interaction; and the use of ministry observation and critical incident reports.
