Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

• Describe the key aspects of children’s ministry from a Christian perspective based on biblical principles

• Identify and discuss the special needs of children of different ages, stages, backgrounds and abilities, and how to minister appropriately to each individual child

• Describe, develop and use methods and materials for children’s ministry and design effective ministry presentations for, and/or with, children.

• Identify and explain the legal and ethical requirements and responsibilities in relation to Duty of Care and Child Protection

Unit Description

The unit commences with a broad introduction to the subject of children’s ministry. The biblical basis for the unit is explored and a philosophy of children’s ministry practice is explored. Of particular importance is child development and age-and stage-appropriate teaching; both methods and models.

The theoretical backgrounds of different approaches to children’s ministry are examined. These include comparing and contrasting styles and approaches in current practice. An important component of the unit requires discovering, designing and managing children’s programs. The student analyses specific situations that require an understanding of planning and directing children’s ministry activities and programs. Specific protocols about the conduct of children’s ministry are addressed.

The subject of discipline, including appropriate discipline of children as well as working with children with special needs is explored. The legal and ethical requirements and responsibilities of children’s ministry workers in relation to Duty of Care and Child Protection is examined, and assessment is made to ensure understanding.

Teaching Strategies

Teaching strategies include lectures, tutorials, weekend schools and presentation of instructional material in the form of printed documentation, OHP, DVD, video and audio tape and on-line interaction. Students also learn by class discussion, personal study, preparation of assignments and assessment comments on their work.
