On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

Unit Description

This subject builds on students’ knowledge and skills learned in LN521.312 Introduction to Language Learning and Linguistics in the areas of morphological and syntactic analysis and description. Major topics covered include:

Students apply their knowledge in analysing a variety of language data and, in doing so, develop a theoretical basis for analysis and description.

By the end of the subject, students should be able to develop morphological and syntactic hypotheses to allow them to describe and discuss the basic grammatical structure of a language in an appropriately insightful way.

Teaching Strategies

Teaching sessions that include: lectures; discussion; demonstrations; computer workshops; and exercises using relevant data from a variety of languages. Tutorial sessions that include: analysing data; discussion of topics covered in teaching sessions; and take-home assignments.
