Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

• Demonstrate the ability to satisfy the general requirements of a consultant who can creatively, ethically and respectfully advise, train and share expert knowledge in their area of specialisation.

• Engage with a broad range of stakeholders, for example, community, language development practitioners, non-government organisations, and governments, in order to provide technical expertise to advance a language development project

• Facilitate culturally and educationally appropriate training and mentoring to support stakeholders’ goals for language development

• Demonstrate a high level of personal, interpersonal and project management skills in support of stakeholder goals for language development

• Engage with, critique and apply missiological insights to approaches to language development projects and to consultant contributions

Unit Description

This unit provides students with a foundation for engaging in technical consulting in support of language development activities. Consultants provide authoritative guidance, input and evaluation at specific stages through the life of a language development program, and their input is integral to quality and assessment of project outcomes. This unit explicitly focuses on the General Core Competencies that are common for all consultants in all domains, including the four categories of personal and interpersonal competencies, technical contributions, language program management, and training. The General Core Competencies are indispensable for a consultant in any domain, and are a component of a consultant’s initial development plan.

Teaching in the unit is typically delivered in a 5-day intensive of 27 hours. Assessments are due across the semester.

Assessment and Indicative Load

Assessment types include Class Presentation, Annotated Bibliography, and Other. Indicative study load is 140 hours.
