At least one of the following units (or equivalent from another institution)
LD802 Literacy in non-dominant languages
LD808 Literacy and multilingual education
LD809 Literacy materials: Community-based design
Or an under-degree in Education or Teaching
Or at least 6-12 months of experience either working in a language project or in a teaching/training capacity (e.g. TESOL class).
On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
Explain how theories relating to language, learning and teaching, and personal faith shape their understanding of and responses to literacy and education needs in a multilingual context.
Critically examine complex issues related to language, culture and education using creative and ethical methodologies.
Devise effective instructional programs that are culturally relevant and build capacity to strengthen sustainable language development.
Use culturally relevant methodologies to evaluate programs and share findings with specialist and non-specialist audiences.
There is often a causal link made between improved literacy and education standards and sustainable development, but the path between the two can be long and winding. This unit aims to equip students to be reflective practitioners who evaluate their professional, ethical and attitudinal approaches to education as they develop knowledge and skills to design, implement and evaluate education programs in collaboration with communities in multilingual contexts.
Students will reflect deeply on how personal beliefs, theoretical perspectives and cultural contexts shape education and language development practices. Attitudes and approaches to language, education and holistic development will be examined along with factors influencing the development of educational policies and programs. Students will engage with practical approaches that emphasise ethical and participatory methodologies in researching community goals and working with community people to develop culturally responsive education materials and programs. Case study analysis will highlight issues and approaches to assessment of learning and program evaluation in terms of its wider social impact.
Teaching in the unit is typically delivered in a 5-day intensive of 27 hours. Assessments are due across the semester.
