Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

• explain the basic requirements for succinct verbal communication for scholarly and popular audiences

• identify and locate the literature pertinent to the area of a chosen topic

• demonstrate skills in research, critical thinking and analysis through reading in the area of this topic in light of missiology and Christian faith

• intelligibly and economically communicate their understanding of debates within the topic area through the preparation of various communication pieces

• Students will be able to critically analyse their research process and outcomes, providing constructive feedback to peers with Christlike humility and demonstrating self-awareness of their strengths and areas for improvement as both a scholar and person of faith

Unit Description

This unit aims to foster and normalise the vocational connection between the focal interests of the language development practitioner, the world of scholarship and research, and communication at the popular level. The unit will sharpen the student’s oral, written and visual communication skills. Engaging with a topic of their choice will enhance their knowledge of a particular subject area, and develop their initiative and powers of independent inquiry and argumentation.

This unit apprentices the postgraduate student into the disciplines involved in producing articles worthy of scholarly and popular publishing, as well as oral communication to popular and scholarly audiences. To this end, the candidate will produce a variety of communication products pertinent to their vocation, and their research interests within that field.

Teaching in the unit is typically delivered in a 5-day intensive of 27 hours. Assessments are due across the semester.
