On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
Identify and analyse the factors that motivated European imperialism within the context of imperialism as a universal globalising phenomenon.
Evaluate the impact of European imperialism in Africa and Asia and its continuing legacy in today’s globalised world.
Analyse the role of perspectives in shaping historical understanding, including Christian perspectives.
Make effective use of both secondary and primary sources in the construction of a well-supported argument.
Many contemporary issues are legacies of European imperialism. This unit addresses the genesis of some of those issues, with particular reference to Africa and Asia. Aspects of the mission movement/imperialism interface are also examined.
