Unit Description

Students undertaking this unit have completed a minor or major study in Drama. The material in this unit is designed to assist the students in applying this content knowledge to improving Yr. 7-10 students’ knowledge and skills in drama. The unit covers knowledge of the particular content that is mandated through the Victorian and Australian Curriculum documents as well as what Shulman called pedagogical content knowledge – the integration of subject knowledge and specific teaching practices appropriate to teaching the content to make it understandable and relevant for young people.

This unit covers relevant learning theory and strategies for promoting motivation, engagement, participation and learning in Drama as well as strategies for assessing students’ competencies and for organising and managing Drama classes. The unit also examines teaching resources and their effectiveness for supporting learning in this discipline, and how to manage the practical side of working with various equipment and material and the balance and interplay of theory and practice. The unit includes a focus on practices that support inclusive access to learning in Drama for students with additional needs. The unit will also introduce various perspectives of teaching Drama, particularly focussing on a Christian perspective of the discipline.
