Unit Description

Students undertaking this unit have completed a minor or major study in Mathematics. The material in this unit is designed to assist the students in applying this content knowledge in teaching Yr. 7-10 Mathematics.

This unit will cover the particular content that is mandated through the Victorian and Australian Curriculum documents and the pedagogical content knowledge – the art of making the content understandable and relevant for youth.

This unit covers relevant learning theory and strategies for promoting motivation, engagement, participation and learning in Mathematics as well as strategies for assessing students’ mathematical competencies and for organising and managing Mathematics classes. In addition, the unit will address teaching mathematical knowledge, skills and processes to students with additional needs in order to create inclusive access to mathematical learning. The unit also examines teaching resources and their effectiveness for supporting mathematical learning. These areas of focus are then applied to prepare units of work, individual lessons and assessments.

The unit will also introduce various perspectives of teaching Mathematics, with particular attention to a Christian perspective.
