Unit Description

In this unit, pre-service teachers will appreciate children’s capacities to learn about and through English language, literacy and literature. Through this unit pre-service teachers will evaluate the opportunities that learning English provides for children to understand themselves and their world. Pre-service teachers will explore a wide range of applications of Englishlanguage, literacy and literature and develop strategies to use and integrate English knowledge and skills within other curriculum areas.

Through this unit students will analyse contemporary theories of how children develop mastery in English. They will identify key aspects in children’s development of concepts and skills. The unit will cover strategies for effective pedagogies, assessment and curriculum design for developing children’s knowledge and skills in English. Pre-service teachers will appreciate the need for and develop inclusive practices for all children, particularly those with English as a second language or dialect. They will evaluate and develop strategies to enable children from a range of diversities and contexts to succeed in learning. The unit will cover the complexities of English and key curriculum documents such as Victorian Curriculum Foundation-10 and Australian Curriculum and the learning theories that underpin them. Through the unit students will examine a range of pedagogies to enable students’ effective learning about, in and through English including: English language and how it works, literary texts, and how to interpret and create texts. This will include exploring the integration of ICT for enhancing learning in English as well as the use of digital technologies for a range of purposes in English such as word processing and publishing.

The unit will also focus on developing pre-service teachers’ personal proficiencies in English as well as proficiencies in the use of related digital technologies to enable their own and children’s learning.

Pre-service teachers will discuss social, cultural and Christian perspectives on English and pedagogies for teaching and learning in English, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, and will consider how their own understandings of Christian writings inform their teaching of English. The professional practice units will provide students with the opportunity to link theory to practice.
