On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
Critically evaluate filmic devices, attribute genre and understanding of narrative arcs to film texts.
Exegetically analyse a film, including scene analysis and contextualisation of the film text
Prepare academic writings to accepted conventions, including the use of industry-specific language and referencing
Demonstrate insight into the relationship between culture and film, a Christian worldview and other worldviews.
Apply a Christian worldview perspective in the examination of film narratives
This unit has been prepared to look at film in two ways: as a literary narrative and as an independent art form. By critically evaluating film from both angles, the unit spotlights filmic devices, structural narrative arcs and genre trends, whilst contemplating authorship of film (auteur), the history and progress of film, film ratings and accessibility in a fast-paced culture. Coursework is structured to isolate text and context of films and position findings against the Christian worldview with discernment and confidence. The art and genre of Christian-Independent film, and film narratives of redemption, will also be used for analysis and comparison.
