Unit Description

Counselling Frameworks and Evidence in Practice is a second-year unit that helps students synthesise what they have learned so far about counselling - approaches, techniques, theories, and ethics - into a practical whole. It provides a sense of the whole process of counselling as well as the processes that support that process. From intake and assessment, contracting, and hosting clients, through to winding up the therapeutic relationship, this unit is less concerned with the theories and practices that constitute therapy itself than it is the “containers” in which therapy is conducted.

The unit also serves as an introductory unit on research literacy. The role of evidence in counselling practice is explored - particularly the ideas of diagnosis and treatment selection that underpin what is called “evidence-based practice” in contrast to the client-oriented “feedback informed” or “practice-based evidence” approaches .
