On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
Relate directive theories of counselling practice to diverse real-world contexts and situations
Apply a directive approach with a client to develop a treatment plan and initiate a therapeutic alliance
Appraise own use of directive skills and practices
Develop competence in the use of a variety of directive therapy skills in counselling
Directive Counselling Skills is a companion unit to CN6100 Directive Therapies: Theory and Practice and augments that unit’s focus on theory and practice principles with experiential skill-development.
Students will have opportunity to see demonstrations of and then try for themselves many of the core skills, practices and interventions used in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - including mindfulness interventions - Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Family Systems Therapy and more. Through video recordings, live demonstrations, plenty of in-class practice activities and practical assessments, students will be coached through the use of each skill and provided feedback about their technique along the way.
This unit must be taken concurrently with CN6100 Directive Therapies: Theory and Practice.
The Unit Offerings listed above are a guide only and the timetable for any year is the final authority. The College may vary offerings based on demand, regulatory requirements, continual improvement processes or other conditions.
