Unit Description

In this unit, the student will participate in additional field experince beyond Intercultural, Life, Work and field Education.

The unit is orientated towards direct cross-cultural experience. Emphasis is placed on learning from the host culture/community, missionaries, field supervisors and others who are in some way involved with that culture/community. Students will learn from observing, listening and talking with the people, and reflecting afterwards on what took place in the light of biblical and missiological principles.

The student is to take the role of a learner, rather than that of one who has come to teach, preach or lead. There will be opportunity for debriefing when they return to College.

The amount of actual ministry that students will undertake will vary greatly according to their situations. It is not expected that students will undertake significant preaching and teaching responsibilities in a country whose language they do not know. They may do practical tasks like cataloguing books for a library, assisting with daily chores, helping in building, nursing, etc. They may be able to give a short message through an interpreter from time to time, to assist in a Sunday School or to play music for a meeting. In English-speaking situations, they may be expected to be more involved in a teaching or preaching ministry.

On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to assess and evaluate his/her ability to adapt and function in a cross-cultural situation.

Teaching Strategies

Teaching strategies include interaction with local people, mission personnel, and field supervisor, and presentation of instructional material in the form of printed documentation, DVD and video tapes and on-line interaction. Students will also learn from personal study and reflection, preparation of assignments, assessment comments on their work and debriefing interview with module supervisor.
