Unit Description

This unit introduces students to sociolinguistic factors which influence the planning, implementation and evaluation of a language development program. Major topics covered include:

By the end of the unit, students should have an understanding of sociolinguistic factors which affect language use at both individual and group level. They will be able to discuss language use in multilingual speech communities, with special emphasis on the situation of minority groups, and recognise factors contributing to language maintenance, spread, shift and death and their implications for language development programs. They should also have developed a basic ability to interpret and evaluate survey reports from other researchers.

Teaching Strategies

Teaching strategies include: lectures; tutorials; and presentation of instructional material in the form of printed documentation, OHP, and multi-media presentation. Students also learn by class discussions, personal study, case studies and survey reports, preparation of assignments and assessment comments on their work.
