Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

Unit Description

This subject examines the process of becoming literate and the complexities of doing so in bilingual, multilingual, and multi-cultural contexts. On successful completion of the subject students should have an understanding of the needs of emergent literates and how to facilitate their acquisition of literacy skills and abilities in a multilingual environment. They will also be introduced to the expectations and philosophies of global agencies, Government and Non-Government Organisations involved in the funding of adult literacy and basic education programs.

Teaching Strategies

Teaching strategies include lectures, tutorials, research, school visits, class discussion and debates, presentation of instructional material in the form of printed documentation, OHP, DVD, video and audio tape. Students also learn by personal study, preparation of assignments and assessment comments on their work.
