Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
Examine and evaluate curriculum, (including informal, school based and contemporary Australian curricula) and assessment (formal and informal) for the junior and middle years of secondary schooling appropriate to the method.
Analyse and evaluate literacy and numeracy needs and strategies relevant to the method and level of student proficiencies.
Communicate high level of knowledge and understanding of the structure and substance of the learning area appropriate to the students’ learning needs and incorporating Christian worldviews.
Integrate ICT into planning and teaching appropriate to the learning and teaching context.
Plan and organise lesson scope and sequence according to appropriate content, student learning needs, effective teaching strategies and Christian worldviews.
Select and organise content, providing scope and sequence for effective learning and teaching in the junior and middle years of secondary schooling.
Unit Description
Students undertaking this unit have completed a minor or major study in English and English Literature. The material in this unit is designed to assist the students apply this content knowledge to improving the English for Yr. 7-10 students. This will require knowledge of the particular content that is mandated through the Victorian Curriculum documents as well as what Shulman called pedagogical content knowledge – the art of making the content understandable and relevant for youth. This unit will introduce the strategies used by experienced teachers to engage manage and assess their English classes. The unit will also introduce various perspectives of teaching English focusing on a Christian perspective of language and language acquisition.
