On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
Select and organise content, providing scope and sequence for effective learning and teaching in the junior and middle years of secondary schooling.
Integrate ICT into planning and teaching appropriate to the learning and teaching context.
Plan and organise lesson scope and sequence according to appropriate content, student learning needs, effective teaching strategies and Christian worldviews.
Communicate high level of knowledge and understanding of the structure and substance of the learning area appropriate to the students’ learning needs and incorporating Christian worldviews.
Examine and evaluate curriculum, (including informal, school based and contemporary Australian curricula) and assessment (diagnostic, formative, summative, formal and informal) for the junior and middle years of secondary schooling appropriate to the method.
Analyse and evaluate literacy and numeracy needs and strategies relevant to the method and level of student proficiencies.
Students undertaking this unit have completed a minor or major study in History. The material in this unit is designed to assist the students in applying this content knowledge and integrating it with specific teaching methods appropriate to teaching Yr. 7-10 History in order to develop students’ pedagogical content knowledge. This unit will cover the particular content that is mandated through the Victorian and Australian Curriculum documents.
This unit covers relevant learning theory and strategies for promoting motivation, engagement, participation and learning in History as well as strategies for assessing students’ competencies and for organising and managing History classes. The unit also examines teaching resources and their effectiveness for supporting learning in this discipline. In addition, the unit will address teaching historical knowledge, skills and processes to students with additional needs in order to create inclusive access to the learning. These areas of focus are then applied to prepare units of work, individual lessons and assessments.
The unit will also explore the teaching of History from a range of perspectives, with particular attention to a Christian perspective.
