Unit Description

This unit may be undertaken as a core competency in the Certificate III in Education Support.

This unit begins with a discussion of emergency evacuation procedures including the relocation to the school’s emergency assembly point. Upon returning to the classroom the trainer reminds learners of the importance of following workplace health and safety instructions and procedures within their scope of responsibility and according to direction. Discussion then moves to to the health and safety of students with special attention paid to child protection legislation. This discussion includes an overview of the causes and impact of abuse and where mandatory reporting is required The unit concludes by discussing health issues in the student community

The theory component of the unit is delivered on a weekly basis at a primary school. The student is required to simultaneously be engaged in a work placement which could be at any of the following: Government school (pre-primary, primary and secondary), private/non-government school (pre-primary, primary and secondary), education centre, kindergarten, special educational centre, or community educational centre.
