Unit Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required as an introduction to working with students that have a recognised disability.

The unit begins by explaining key elements of the Disability Discrimination Act and highlighting the implications for teachers and education support workers. Discussion then moves to explaining some of the issues facing students with disabilities. This discussion is illustrated with examples from at least two different disabilities.

The unit then highlights how accommodating students with particular disabilities impacts upon other students. This point is Illustrated with at least one example from the following: epilepsy, ADHD, Asperger’s Spectrum Disorder.

The unit then moves to exploring options for determining levels of disability with questionnaires and other resources considered. This discussion also includes an exploration of how the individual needs of students with disabilities can be established. It is against this background that the concept of reasonable adjustment is introduced.

The unit concludes by reviewing the concept of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and how reasonable adjustment can be incorporated into an IEP.
