Unit Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide support to students who have English as a second language (ESL).

The unit begins by discussing how to facilitate communication between the student, the school and the parent/carer/guardian. Particular attention is paid towards identifying communication barriers.

The unit then discusses how to implement an English as a Second Language (ESL) support program. Attention is paid to the different roles and responsibilities of; the education support worker, the teacher and any support service personnel.

The unit concludes with an investigation and discussion of the factors affecting language acquisition. During this discussion the importance of identifying and dealing with cultural issues in a sensitive and appropriate manner is explained.
