Relationship to competency standards

Unit Description

This unit may be undertaken as a core competency in the Certificate III in Education Support.

This unit begins with a discussion on work placements where the difficulties encountered and lessons learned are explored. This discussion serves as the background for an introduction to the topic of communication. Questioning techniques are introduced where the trainer demonstrates these techniques and then facilitates the practice of these techniques by the learners present. The unit then moves to the importance of communication that is respectful, and considers body language and other non-verbal cues. The unit concludes by exploring the need to adapt communication styles and methods to suit cultural sensitivities.

The theory component of the unit is delivered on a weekly basis at a primary school. The student is required to simultaneously be engaged in a work placement which could be at any of the following: Government school (pre-primary, primary and secondary), private/non-government school (pre-primary, primary and secondary), education centre, kindergarten, special educational centre, or Community educational centre.
