Unit Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required in providing assistance to students who need additional support with their reading, writing and oral language skills.

This unit begins by discussing the process of language development and strategies that support language development. The discussion then narrows to how children develop listening skills and develop oral language skills. Learners are then introduced to speech and language disorders and the adjustments that should be made for students that have these impairments. Oral language activities and oral triggers are considered against the framework that has been established earlier in the unit.

The unit concludes by emphasising the importance of monitoring and recording language and communication programs.
