Unit Description

This unit may be undertaken as a core competency in the Certificate III in Education Support.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to support the effective functioning of a classroom or other learning environment. The unit begins by discussing the organisation of classroom structures and routines and then moves to practical issues such as the selection and use of equipment. It deals with the administration of equipment, teaching aids and other supplies. The learner is then introduced to the organisation, storage and access to information. This discussion includes the need for documentation and record keeping. The unit concludes by emphasising the requirement to work and communicate within a team.

The theory component of the unit is delivered on a weekly basis at a primary school. The student is required to simultaneously be engaged in a work placement which could be at any of the following: Government school (pre-primary, primary and secondary), private/non-government school (pre-primary, primary and secondary), education centre, kindergarten, special educational centre, or Community educational centre.
