Unit Description

This unit explores the ecology of the learning environment focusing on the interactions and relationships between the elements of the classroom - the teacher, students and the physical space - and how factors related to these elements contribute to and impact on the learning environment. Through this unit, students will develop their understanding of students at the class and individual level. They will examine variance among students and how teachers can respond to student variance in order to create an inclusive and safe learning environment (physically, emotionally and academically), that promotes learning and well-being for all students.

The unit also focuses on understanding student behaviours and practices that promote desirable behaviours, as well as understanding triggers for negative behaviours and practices for responding to them. Students will develop planned responses to positive and negative behaviours, including a focus on restorative justice in schools.

The work of experts such as Carol Tomlinson and Colin Marsh are studied as well as Christian perspectives on classroom management, learning environments and the teacher’s and students’ roles, in order to develop inclusive practices that promote student learning and well-being.
