On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
Examine the nature and needs of students and schools in the 21st century
Reflect on personal competence as a professional communicator
Research and examine contemporary issues impacting education
Defend a personal philosophy of education that consolidates knowledge and practice within the context of Christian thought
Explore and explain reflections on self as learner and self as Christian teacher
Outline and assess strategies to successfully transition to Beginning Teacher
In this final unit, pre-service teachers will synthesise and reflect on broad issues and professional practices in education generally and those that affect beginning teachers in particular.
Pre-service teachers will critically examine the nature and needs of students and schools in the 21st century including: the need for increasing levels of higher education for teachers; working in open learning spaces; teaching teams; online learning; schools as community centres; comprehensive indigenous education; international learning opportunities; Asian literacies; need for high levels of proficiency in literacy, numeracy and digital technologies; education in and for mental health and disabilities; interpersonal and intrapersonal learning; and spiritual formation.
Pre-service teachers will reflect on the changing role of teachers and the inherent professional opportunities and challenges that follow. They will examine ways of professional communication such as oral, written and electronic methods as well as potential audiences including students, parents, colleagues and the wider community.
They will have the opportunity to research significant contemporary issues that are shaping schools education eg Australian Curriculum; literacy and numeracy skills; family influences on student learning outcomes; indigenous education; the impact of education on students in low socio-economic environments; technologies; global interaction.
They will defend a developing personal philosophy of education. They will also defend their understanding of self as learner and how that impacts their approach to teaching.
Pre-service teachers will articulate strategies for their transition to Beginning Teacher and beyond. They will reflect on their personal strengths and challenges as Christian teachers.
Pre-service teachers will appreciate employment opportunities and conditions. They will write a professional application and curriculum vitae and engage in a mock employment interview.
Pre-service teachers learning in this course will involve a variety of approaches including: lectures; practicum; observations; responding to educational scenarios; critical reflections; discussions; tutorials; workshops; assessment tasks; assessment feedback; guest speakers; classroom observations; practical teaching assignments; reflective journals; contact with professional associations; oral presentations; and online activities.

This unit may be available in different modes of delivery i.e. online and face-to-face as listed above. The unit content will not differ between these modes of delivery.
