Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

• Describe students’ common stages and patterns of development in The Arts and HPE

• Examine the impact students’ diversities and contexts have on their learning about and through The Arts and HPE

• Understand complexities in The Arts and HPE as a disciplines including their description in AusVELS and the Australian Curriculum

• Develop a range of pedagogies to enable students’ effective learning about and through The Arts and HPE

• Demonstrate personal proficiencies in The Arts and HPE

• Apply a range of digital technologies to enable teaching and learning strategies

• Review social, cultural and Christian perspectives on The Arts and HPE

Unit Description

In this unit, pre-service teachers will appreciate children’s capacities to learn about and through The Arts and HPE. The practicum will provide opportunity to link theory to practice.

Pre-service teachers will critically evaluate contemporary theories of how students’ develop mastery in Arts and HPE. They will identify key aspects in children’s development of concepts and skills. They will develop strategies for effective pedagogies, assessment and curriculum design in primary settings.

Pre-service teachers will appreciate the need for and develop capacities in inclusive practices for all children. They will plan for and evaluate strategies to enable children from a range of diversities and contexts to succeed.

Pre-service teachers will develop a critical understanding of the complexities of Arts and HPE and key curriculum documents such as AusVELS and Australian Curriculum and the learning theories that underpin them. They will develop a range of pedagogies to enable students’ effective learning about, in and through Arts and HPE including the

• AusVELS Dimensions of Creating and making; and Exploring and responding; and
• AusVELS Dimensions of Movement and physical activity; and Health knowledge and promotion.
• Australian Curriculum (Draft) as relevant areas become available
  Pre-service teachers will evaluate the opportunities that Arts and HPE provides for children to understand themselves and their world. Pre-service teachers will explore a wide range of applications of Arts and HPE and develop strategies to integrate them in other curriculum areas.

They will develop personal proficiencies in the practical areas of the Arts including visual arts and music and; PE including ball handling skills, athletics; and dance.

Through practicum, College-based assignments and individual portfolios pre-service teachers will demonstrate personal proficiencies in Arts and HPE. They will also demonstrate proficiencies in the use of related digital technologies to enable their own and children’s learning.

Pre-service teachers will discuss social, cultural and Christian perspectives on the impact of proficiency in Arts and HPE on individuals, their communities and in a global setting. They will consider how their own understandings of Christian writings inform their teaching of Arts and HPE. They will reflect on their personal strengths and challenges as Christian teachers.

Unit Structure

This unit will deliver the programs of The Arts and HPE separately. Each delivery will total half the unit.

Assessment will be moderated by the lecturers in the unit and then according to usual College moderation process.

Teaching Strategies

Pre-service teachers learning in this course will involve a variety of approaches including: lectures; practicum; observations; responding to educational scenarios; critical reflections; discussions; tutorials; workshops; assessment tasks; assessment feedback; guest speakers; classroom observations; practical teaching assignments; reflective journals; contact with professional associations; oral presentations; and online activities.
