Unit Description

This unit is designed to enable learners to deepen their theoretical understanding and counselling skills through consideration of a specialised area of counselling, approaches to counselling or concerns related to a specific group of persons or context of counselling. Areas covered in depth in other units will not be included, however topics introduced but not expanded in other units may be included. The selected applications will vary from year to year and will include a range of options common to many counselling practitioners including: trauma counselling; couples counselling; grief and loss counselling; play therapy; educational and school counselling; group counselling; and others. This unit will present content and issues related to the special area of application of counselling, as well as specific theories, models and skills relevant to the specialisation. Learners will be encouraged to develop an integrative theory and research - informed approach to the specialty area of counselling and consider the roles of other professionals with regard to the specialisation.
