On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
Critically evaluate and implement methods of biblical criticism used in interpreting the New Testament.
Demonstrate an understanding of New Testament passages through application to contemporary settings.
Use specialised technical skills in the study and exegesis of passages from the New Testament.
Synthesise previously acquired theological knowledge with insights gained from critical analysis of New Testament passage(s).
This subject will integrate the skills and knowledge gained in subjects BB824.406 Introduction to the Bible, with additional specialised exegetical knowledge and techniques. Once completed the integration of the subject will allow the student to make high level independent analysis of passages from a selected book or books from the New Testament.
The unit commences with a critical evaluation of the broader contextual issues including the influences of cultural, historical, political and religious factors on the book/s. Critical questions of authorship and sources will be addressed.
Critical evaluation of the language, literary style, emphases, concepts and theological themes characteristic of the chosen writing will be conducted and the analysis synthesised with previous theological understanding.
The theological implications of the chosen texts and broader contexts will be examined. The interpretive work shall include using creative skills to communicate the complexities of the interpretive analysis to contemporary audiences with limited biblical understanding.
Teaching strategies include: lectures and tutorials; weekend schools; class discussions; presentation of instructional material in the form of printed documentation, DVD, video and audio tape and on-line interaction; and weekly exegetical assignments.
