Unit Description

In this unit students will be introduced to the concepts and theories of the dramatic arts as they interact with social and cultural issues. This will include a brief survey of the history of the dramatic arts with particular emphasis on social and cultural influence. A particular social / cultural issue will be presented as the focus of the unit and students will work together to research this area. This research will be be combined with an exploration of the possible ways for the dramatic arts to interact with it, including the relationship of the Christian faith to the issue.

This unit is not purely theoretical as students will simultaneously work on relevant performance and production theories and practices. The performance work will develop their familiarisation with performance and their awareness of themselves and others. The production skills will inform their understanding of how the dramatic arts may interact with the presented issue.

While this unit may be taken without continuing, the research and exploration that students engage in will directly inform Dramatic Arts and Communication 2 as the basis for the development of a group devised work.
