Description

Community Development is a very broad term that refers to a set of principles, practices and academic disciplines that seeks to engage in social change utilising the very dynamics that define community. As such, Community Development emphasises matters of justice, participation and empowerment such that individuals and collectives can access the means they need to affect positive change in their own communities. Such an approach to strengthening communities is found throughout the discipline areas of the Bachelor of Arts. This minor sequence, however, entails systematic study, skill development and applied learning to give increased expression to community development practices in a variety of vocational settings. The minor sequence offers students an exploration of the sociological perspectives that underpin these development perspectives as well as an appreciation of the principles that guide the practice of community development. Students will also develop skills in the research and analysis of social settings while growing their proficiency to nurture justice, empowerment, and affect positive change. Finally, the minor sequence offers an opportunity to consider the social implications of Christian spirituality – both as a critique and encouragement of past and present initiatives.
